Maltese technology leader Marlon Grech has been ranked eighth in Lloyd’s List’s prestigious Top 10 Technology Leaders for 2025, placing him among the most influential figures shaping the future of global shipping.
Grech, who serves as Chief Product and Technology Officer at maritime vetting and sustainability platform RightShip, makes his first appearance on the annual list, which recognises individuals driving meaningful digital change across the maritime industry. Compiled by Lloyd’s List’s editorial team, the ranking reflects the growing role of data, analytics and predictive technology in shipping’s transformation.
Lloyd’s List highlighted Grech’s journey from founder to global technology leader, noting that he joined RightShip in 2022 following the acquisition of Thynk Software, a maritime software company he founded in 2013. Since then, he has led a comprehensive overhaul of the RightShip platform, fundamentally expanding how vessel risk, safety and environmental performance are assessed.
Under Grech’s leadership, the platform has evolved beyond a traditional due diligence tool. It now combines historical data with predictive analytics to anticipate future vessel behaviour, enabling shipowners and charterers to make better-informed decisions. Safety performance metrics and greenhouse gas ratings are among the tools helping the industry navigate rising regulatory, environmental and operational demands.
According to Lloyd’s List, the shift towards prediction rather than simple reporting marks a significant step forward for transparency in shipping. The publication described RightShip’s platform as transitioning into an essential component of the maritime professional’s toolkit, reflecting wider changes underway across the sector.
Grech’s inclusion places him alongside global technology leaders such as Gwynne Shotwell of SpaceX’s Starlink, whose satellite connectivity has reshaped maritime communications, and executives driving innovation in alternative fuels, cybersecurity, wind-assisted propulsion and emissions analytics. The 2025 list underscores how rapidly technology is redefining vessel operations, safety standards and sustainability targets.
Founded in 1734, Lloyd’s List is one of the world’s oldest continuously running journals and remains a central authority in maritime reporting and analysis. Its Top 10 Technology Leaders list forms part of the Lloyd’s List One Hundred People series, which highlights individuals whose work is delivering tangible impact across the industry.
Commenting in his company biography, Grech has previously said the maritime sector is undergoing a technology and data revolution, describing it as an opportunity to improve safety, sustainability and crew welfare through smarter systems.
His recognition by Lloyd’s List not only marks a personal milestone, but also places Maltese-founded innovation firmly on the global maritime technology map at a time when data-driven decision-making is becoming critical to the industry’s future.
