GIANLUCA BORG NAMED CEO OF PG GROUP AFTER MORE THAN A DECADE IN SENIOR LEADERSHIP

Gianluca Borg has been appointed chief executive of the PG Group of Companies, succeeding Malcolm Camilleri in the role.

Borg’s path to the top job is a straightforward case of internal progression done properly. He joined the group in 2013 as Head of Purchasing, with responsibility across both Pama Supermarket and Pavi Supermarket. Seven years later he was appointed executive director, and in 2024 – after more than a decade leading the Purchasing Department – he stepped up to Deputy CEO. The chief executive appointment follows from there.

The timing is notable. Borg takes the helm shortly after PG Group opened St George’s Mall on the former ITS site at St George’s Bay, a development that signals a meaningful expansion in the group’s footprint. A PG Group subsidiary has signed a long-term lease agreement with the db Group covering the mall and an adjacent car park, held through DB Gauci Shopping Mall Ltd – a jointly owned entity in which PG holds a 60 per cent majority stake and db retains the remaining 40 per cent.

It is a considerable moment for a group that has grown steadily from its supermarket roots into a broader retail and commercial operation. Borg’s appointment puts someone with deep institutional knowledge of the business at the top, at a point when the group is clearly pushing into new territory.
