France’s cryptocurrency sector is facing a security crisis after a string of violent kidnappings targeting crypto executives and their families. The attacks have sparked widespread fear and triggered an urgent reassessment of personal safety measures within the industry.
The most recent incident involved an attempted abduction of the daughter of a prominent crypto CEO on a Paris street in broad daylight. It was at least the third such case in recent months, following two earlier kidnappings involving high-profile crypto figures and their relatives. In both earlier cases, the victims were eventually rescued, but not before suffering physical harm.
The wave of violence has rattled the French crypto community. Executives are increasingly investing in bodyguards, altering routines, and tightening online privacy. Security companies in Paris have reported a sharp rise in demand for personal protection services, and crypto-focused insurance firms say kidnap and ransom coverage has become a top concern for clients.
The French government has responded by pledging enhanced support. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau recently met with crypto industry representatives, offering emergency access to police and home security checks. Authorities have made arrests in connection with the earlier attacks, though little is known about the organised groups believed to be behind them.
The incidents come amid a boom in crypto wealth. Rising valuations, especially of Bitcoin and digital collectibles, have created a new class of affluent founders and investors, many of whom are highly visible on social media. Experts warn this visibility may be making them easy targets.
The industry is also questioning whether European regulations—particularly those requiring transparency in crypto transactions—may be inadvertently increasing risk. Some argue that stricter data collection rules, while aimed at curbing money laundering, could be exposing individuals to physical danger by linking identities to wallets.
With no end in sight to the threat, France’s crypto entrepreneurs are taking matters into their own hands. Many are now reconsidering their presence at public events and adopting more discreet lifestyles, while others are calling for broader policy changes to enhance protection for those in the sector.
