In the fast-paced and evolving aviation industry, collaboration and technological advancements have become essential components for operational excellence. Few individuals understand this better than Robert Risso, Director of Flight Operations at Flite Watch Ltd.
With over 45 years of experience, including key leadership roles at Air Malta and Comlux Aviation, Risso has seen first-hand how technology has reshaped the aviation landscape. Today, he continues to drive aviation excellence, building on his extensive knowledge and leadership to optimise operations at Flite Watch in partnership with Epic for Business.
This is the third episode of the “We Mean Business” mini-series, produced in collaboration with Epic for Business. Previous episodes have highlighted the stories of leading industry figures, showcasing the role of technology in transforming businesses. This episode delves into the aviation industry, focusing on how strategic partnerships can help overcome challenges and pave the way for growth.
The Evolution of Flight Watch Ltd
Robert Risso’s involvement with Flite Watch began as the company sought to establish a strong presence in Malta’s aviation sector. Founded by an ex-traffic controller with an eye for opportunity, Flight Watch aimed to fill a niche by providing aircraft charter services for owners who weren’t utilising their aircraft. Recognising the potential to create a “virtual airline,” Risso was brought on board to assist in meeting regulatory requirements and establishing the company as a reputable operator with a global reach. Today, Flite Watch operates a unique business model where most of its operations are managed remotely, supported by a robust IT infrastructure.
Challenges and Triumphs
Establishing a new airline in an already competitive market is never without its challenges. Risso describes the initial phases as rigorous, requiring meticulous attention to regulatory compliance and a focus on building a solid IT framework that could support international operations. “Aircraft never come to Malta,” Risso explains, “They fly worldwide, so everything has to be coordinated remotely.”
Flite Watch’s reliance on technology and strong communication channels led to its partnership with Epic for Business, whose solutions have been integral to managing and scaling operations efficiently.
Collaboration with Epic for Business
One of the standout aspects of Flite Watch’s journey has been its collaboration with Epic for Business. This partnership initially began when the company needed high-speed, reliable, and secure internet services to manage its international operations. Epic stepped in with a bespoke solution, providing a direct, dedicated link that ensured optimal speed and security.
“Epic’s service has been pivotal in helping us establish our IT and communication systems,” Risso notes. “Their support allowed us to implement cloud-based solutions that are both secure and resilient against cyber threats. This capability is now a requirement for any aviation business looking to remain competitive and compliant with regulations.”
Future Growth and Technology in Aviation
Looking ahead, Flite Watch’s founder has plans to grow the fleet to a maximum of 15 aircraft, noting that they do not intend to expand beyond this number. “When you go beyond 15 or 20 aircraft, you’re not actually running the airline—structures start running themselves, and you lose the personal touch,” Risso explains. The company’s strategy is to maintain a balance between growth and maintaining its unique business model.

Additionally, Risso has a keen eye on how technological advancements, such as AI, will shape the future of aviation. “The industry is evolving rapidly, and technology like AI will play a crucial role in decision-making and even reducing the number of pilots required in the cockpit,” he shares. He suggests that the move from two pilots to one, supported by AI and remote assistance, is a likely future scenario, although it remains to be seen how it will be received by both regulators and the public.
Conclusion: As the aviation sector continues to evolve, the story of Robert Risso and Flite Watch Ltd is a testament to the importance of innovation, collaboration, and strategic partnerships. With the support of Epic for Business, Flite Watch is well-positioned to navigate the challenges of an ever-changing industry and continue its legacy of operational excellence and growth—without compromising its core principles or its vision for the future of aviation.
