ANTHROPIC CEO DARIO AMODEI PUBLISHES 3,800-WORD ESSAY CALLING FOR AI SLOWDOWN

Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei published a 3,800-word essay on Saturday arguing that the artificial intelligence industry needs to slow down. Within 24 hours, OpenAI’s Sam Altman had signalled agreement, Elon Musk had weighed in with three words and DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis had added his name to the same position.

Four of the wealthiest figures in technology, all with enormous stakes in accelerating AI development, effectively announced that the field they are building may be moving too fast to be trusted. It was a rare moment of alignment at the top of the industry.

President Trump dismissed safety concerns in an all-caps post, characterising them as a conspiracy. The Commerce Department’s formal engagement with AI laboratories has been limited to export controls governing who can buy the technology, with no regulatory action taken on the pace at which it is being developed.

That leaves the pressure on hardware rather than policy. Nvidia’s stock had already shed roughly 19 per cent from its June peak before Amodei published his essay, with markets apparently pricing in a smaller-scale buildout for some weeks. The company remains essential to any large AI training run, with chief executive Jensen Huang central to that infrastructure dependency. Huang is reportedly set to anchor Anthropic’s forthcoming stock market listing with a ten-billion-dollar commitment, which would make the relationship between the two companies considerably more formal.

The sequence of events raises an obvious question that the source material leaves open: if four of the industry’s most influential figures believe the pace of development poses genuine risks and government shows no appetite to act, who actually holds the brake? For now, the answer appears to be nobody and markets are quietly beginning to reflect that.
