OpenAI has launched what it describes as its most intelligent model to date, GPT-6 Astra, in a direct challenge to rival Anthropic as both companies edge closer to potential stock-market listings.
Released on Thursday, Astra represents a broad capability upgrade across software engineering, scientific research, financial modelling, tax preparation and data analysis. OpenAI has been clear that this is not a narrow improvement in one area but a significant step beyond its previous systems across the board.
OpenAI President Greg Brockman went further still, suggesting Astra could signal the opening of the artificial general intelligence era: the point at which AI systems become capable of performing most economically valuable work at a human level. It is an ambitious claim, though not a surprising one given the competitive pressure OpenAI is currently navigating.
That pressure has a name: Anthropic. The rival laboratory has been steadily winning over businesses and professional users through its Claude model family and released its own Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 models just days before OpenAI’s announcement. The timing of Astra’s launch was hardly accidental.
Perhaps the most striking element of the new model is its cybersecurity capability. Astra can reportedly identify previously unknown vulnerabilities in computer systems and, during testing, generate functional exploits with limited human guidance. OpenAI has responded by placing those capabilities behind additional access restrictions, making them available initially only to a small group of vetted testers. The company has acknowledged that Astra’s power demands a more careful approach to safety oversight than earlier models required.
OpenAI’s valuation stands at around 852 billion dollars. With a public listing on the horizon, the stakes around technical leadership, customer acquisition and revenue have rarely been higher. Anthropic is in a comparable position. For both companies, the race to define the frontier of AI capability is simultaneously a race to make the strongest possible case to future investors.
