Geoffrey Fichte, CEO of HSBC Bank Malta, has pointed to fresh Eurostat data placing Malta as the European Union’s fastest-growing economy in 2025, with real GDP expansion of 5%. That figure puts the island comfortably ahead of second-placed Denmark at 4.5% and more than double the EU average.

Poland and Croatia followed at 3.8%, with Cyprus and Lithuania rounding out the top five. At the other end of the table, Latvia, Italy and Hungary each recorded growth below 0.5%.

Fichte attributes Malta’s outperformance to a broad mix of drivers: strong tourism, financial and professional services, digital and gaming sectors, robust domestic demand and continued workforce growth. The 2025 reading sits alongside a 3.7% growth forecast for 2026, suggesting the momentum is expected to hold.

The GDP figures form part of a wider economic picture Fichte has been outlining. He has also pointed to unemployment close to 3%, a declining budget deficit, government debt on course for a 30-year low and the second-highest median household net wealth in the EU. European mortgage rates on the island are cited as the continent’s lowest.

Fichte frames these indicators not as isolated data points but as mutually reinforcing strengths, with Malta’s labour market, public finances and property conditions each feeding into the broader growth story. Low unemployment, resilient fiscal positions, rising real estate values and now the EU’s fastest GDP growth make for a compounding narrative rather than a single headline number.
