MISTRAL AI CLOSES €3 BILLION ROUND IN LARGEST EVER EUROPEAN TECH FUNDRAISE

Mistral AI has closed a €3 billion fundraising round, the largest ever recorded for a private European technology company, the Paris-based artificial intelligence firm announced on Tuesday, 8th September. The raise pushes Mistral’s valuation to €21 billion, nearly doubling the €11.7 billion figure attached to its previous round in September 2025.

Samsung led the investment, with the Scale-up Europe fund, backed by the European Commission to support home-grown AI companies, also joining as a new shareholder. The scale of the round is striking in another respect: it exceeds the roughly €2.7 billion Mistral had raised across its entire history since being founded in April 2023.

The timing, though, is complicated. Since the summer of 2026, questions have been circulating about the direction the company is actually taking. Once positioned as Europe’s clearest answer to OpenAI and Anthropic, Mistral has drawn criticism for moves that look, to some observers, less like those of an AI laboratory and more like those of a cloud infrastructure provider.

The sharpest public challenge came in a blog post published on 17th August by Pierre-Louis Biojout, a San Francisco-based tech entrepreneur. He was responding to Mistral’s 11th August announcement of a consortium planning to build European data centres with a combined power capacity of one gigawatt by 2030. Biojout took particular issue with the fact that the project would distribute open-source models including GLM-5.2, developed by Chinese start-up Z.ai.

“Three years ago, Mistral embodied a simple promise: Europe would have its own leading laboratory, able to rival OpenAI and Anthropic,” Biojout wrote. “But today, the start-up sells computing power and hosts Chinese models.” He called the shift “a strategic pivot, even a capitulation,” and argued that the vision of European AI sovereignty had quietly moved from building intelligence to hosting other people’s intelligence on European soil.

Whether the record fundraise reflects genuine renewed ambition or simply deeper pockets for a company that has already changed shape, remains an open question.
