Forbes has placed Malta on its 2026 list of the Best Places to Retire Abroad, highlighting the island’s Mediterranean climate, affordable healthcare and overall quality of life as the principal draws for international retirees.
The global business publication described Malta as a ‘sunny Mediterranean island nation with terrific beaches’ and praised its combination of history, safety and accessible living costs. Valletta, Gozo, St. Paul’s Bay and Qawra were singled out as among the most suitable locations for those considering a move to the island.
Several practical advantages featured prominently in Forbes’ assessment. English holds official language status, healthcare is rated both high-quality and affordable and the cost of living sits roughly 25 per cent below the United States average. Malta’s low crime rate, stable political environment and limited natural disaster exposure were also cited as compelling factors for prospective retirees.
American retirees received particular attention. Forbes pointed to the Malta Retirement Programme as a well-established residency route, which requires a minimum combined annual retirement income of around $39,000 per couple alongside a one-year residential lease. A bilateral tax treaty between Malta and the United States helps prevent double taxation and most retirement income held outside Malta is not subject to local tax.
On connectivity, Forbes acknowledged that travel between Malta and the United States typically involves a connection, but noted that Delta Air Lines now operates seasonal direct services between Malta and New York’s JFK Airport, easing the transatlantic journey considerably.
The 2026 ranking places Malta alongside some of the most recognised retirement destinations globally. Forbes’ endorsement reflects the island’s consistent appeal across climate, lifestyle and healthcare – factors that continue to attract retirees from North America and further afield.
