In a candid conversation, Gregory Inglott, the newly appointed CEO of HSBC Life Assurance Malta Ltd., reflects on his career journey, the evolving landscape of the financial services industry, and his vision for the future of HSBC Life Malta.
With two decades of experience within HSBC Malta, including international stints in the UK and Asia, Inglott brings a wealth of knowledge and a fresh perspective to his role.
A Career Built on Curiosity and Ambition
Gregory Inglott’s journey with HSBC began as a Relationship Manager (RM) in wealth management, a field closely aligned with his academic interests. Over the past 20 years, he has held various roles, learning the nuances of wealth management and retail banking. “I’ve done probably 11 jobs, learning all the disciplines across the years, which is very important,” Inglott shares.
His international experience, particularly in London, managing over a million premier customers with a revenue line just under a billion pounds, and short-term assignments in Indonesia, have been pivotal. “London’s a fantastic place to be and to work. In banking, it was the cutting edge around technology advancement and FinTech development,” he notes.
Embracing the Power of Sport and Trust
Inglott is a firm believer in the lessons sports can teach, which translate well into the business world. “There are many sportsmen I admire for their traits of perseverance and self-development, which are great to put into the business context,” he says. He also emphasizes the importance of trust in high-performing businesses, recommending the book “The Speed of Trust” by Stephen M.R. Covey as a valuable resource.
The Future of Work and Generational Shifts
Inglott acknowledges the generational shift in attitudes towards work-life balance and career longevity. He notes that younger employees are more likely to switch firms and seek immediate results. “In the past, financial services were lifelong careers. Now, younger people are more willing to explore opportunities elsewhere,” he observes. However, he also appreciates the younger generation’s heightened awareness of societal impacts and sustainability.
Addressing Industry Challenges
Inglott identifies several mega trends shaping the financial services industry, including the reduction of bureaucratic friction and the increasing use of data to make quicker, more personalized decisions. “The use of data to reduce risks and make more personal decisions is where a lot of investment is going,” he explains.
He also highlights the significant investment in technology to combat financial crime, such as HSBC’s use of AI to reduce money laundering risks. “HSBC has invested heavily in technology, including AI, to reduce triggers or points where there could be money laundering risks,” he adds.
Innovations and Customer-Centric Solutions
One of the key initiatives under Inglott’s leadership is the K5 critical illness product, launched last year to great success. This product aims to protect customers from financial hardship due to major illnesses such as cancer, kidney failure, and heart disease. “An insurance company providing a payout to make the transition easier during major illnesses is extremely important,” he states.
Vision for HSBC Life Malta
Looking ahead, Inglott envisions a future where HSBC Life Malta’s customers are better prepared for life’s uncertainties. He aims to see more customers using the company’s products and services to live life better prepared. “Our goal is to make sure our customers’ goals and plans have a solution against them,” he asserts.
Personal Reflections and Managerial Style
On a personal note, Inglott describes his managerial style as hands-on but not micromanaging, with a focus on high energy and clear goals. “I like to give space to the team to operate but ensure we have goals and milestones to measure progress,” he explains.
Reflecting on his journey, Inglott expresses a desire for a more extensive international experience and the benefits of an expatriate lifestyle for his family. He advises his younger self to focus on strengths and pursue self-development, a philosophy he continues to champion.
Final Thoughts
As he steps into his new role, Gregory Inglott is poised to lead HSBC Life Malta through an era of innovation and customer-centric solutions. With a clear vision and a commitment to trust and transparency, he aims to navigate the company towards a future where customers are better prepared and more resilient in the face of life’s challenges.
