The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) has strongly welcomed the announcement of a direct flight between New York and Malta, calling it a historic breakthrough for the country’s tourism industry.
The association praised the Malta Tourism Authority and Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg, who also holds the foreign affairs and tourism portfolio, for securing the long-anticipated connection. For years, industry leaders have argued that direct links to the United States were crucial for Malta’s long-term competitiveness in the global travel market.
MHRA highlighted the potential of the American market, describing it as one of the most valuable in international tourism. U.S. travellers are widely recognised for longer visits, higher spending power, and strong interest in cultural heritage, gastronomy, and authentic experiences – sectors where Malta is well placed to compete. The new route, it said, offers unprecedented potential to attract these visitors and significantly raise the quality of inbound tourism.
The association also pointed to opportunities beyond traditional leisure travel. The meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) sector, along with religious and faith-based tourism, are expected to benefit from easier access for U.S. travellers. Malta’s blend of history, culture, and modern conference facilities, MHRA said, is well suited to capture a share of these specialised markets.
For MHRA, the flight is not just an upgrade in accessibility but a strategic milestone that raises Malta’s international profile. The organisation stressed that in a highly competitive global landscape, reliable direct routes are essential rather than optional for small island nations.
Association president Tony Zahra described the development as the “missing piece of the puzzle” for tapping into the American market. He argued that direct connectivity would allow Malta to target “discerning travellers” whose impact on the economy would be substantial, praising the leadership shown by government in making the deal happen.
The association reiterated its commitment to support the rollout of the route and said it would work closely with government and other stakeholders to ensure the connection is a long-term success.
