Maltese Shipping Entrepreneur And Sailing Legend John Ripard Sr Dies At 96

Maltese shipping entrepreneur and former Olympian John Ripard Sr has died at the age of 96. The news was announced by the Royal Malta Yacht Club, where he served as Honorary President. A tribute from the club described him as "a visionary sailor, an Olympian, and one of the founding figures of the Rolex Middle Sea Race". His passion for the sea, leadership, and generosity had inspired generations of sailors to take to the water.

Ripard played a key role in modernising Malta's maritime industry, including introducing containerisation to the country. As Chairman of John Ripard & Son (Shipping) Ltd, one of Malta's oldest shipping companies, he made significant contributions to the sector. Beyond his work in shipping, he was a founding figure of the Rolex Middle Sea Race and won the inaugural edition in 1968.

Ripard also had an illustrious sailing career, representing Malta at the 1960 Summer Olympics alongside his brother Paul. He later served as an international sailing judge, including at the 1996 Summer Olympics. The Royal Malta Yacht Club thanked Ripard for his decades of service and contribution to sailing in Malta, stating that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.

The club's tribute highlighted Ripard's lasting impact on Malta's maritime heritage. His family, friends, and loved ones will be deeply saddened by the news of his passing at 96.
