Malta International Airport (MIA) continues to enhance its connectivity, introducing three new routes in March 2025. Scandinavian Airlines has resumed direct flights to Copenhagen, Denmark, while Universal Air has initiated services to Debrecen, Hungary’s second-largest city. Additionally, easyJet has launched a new link between Malta and London Southend, providing travelers with more options to the United Kingdom.
These additions come as MIA reports a substantial increase in passenger traffic. In March alone, the airport handled 725,134 passengers, up from 633,826 in the same month last year. Italy remained the top market, accounting for 19.6% of the traffic, followed closely by the United Kingdom at 18.9%. Poland, Germany, and Spain completed the top five markets for the month.
For the entire year of 2024, MIA welcomed a record-breaking 8.96 million passengers, marking a 14.8% increase over the previous year. This growth is attributed to both the expansion of routes and the increased seat capacity, which rose by 14%. The airport’s seat load factor also reached an all-time high of 86%, indicating efficient utilization of available seats.
Currently, Malta International Airport connects to over 100 direct routes across 35 countries, solidifying its position as a key hub in the Mediterranean region. The airport’s strategic expansion and consistent growth underscore its commitment to enhancing Malta’s accessibility and supporting the island’s tourism and business sectors.
