HSBC Bank Malta has launched SEPA Instant Outward Payments, giving customers the ability to send and receive euro transfers within seconds to any country in the SEPA zone — 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The new service is available through the HSBC Mobile Banking App, Online Banking (including HSBCnet), and in-branch, allowing payments to be completed in under 10 seconds — even on weekends and public holidays.
The rollout marks a significant upgrade in cross-border payment efficiency, combining speed, safety, and transparency at competitive rates for both personal and business customers.
Key features of the new service include instant transfers across Europe, real-time verification of payee (VoP) to confirm the beneficiary’s account details before a payment is made, and immediate confirmation once the funds are delivered. A new IBAN paste function within the HSBC Mobile App also simplifies input, reducing errors and making payments to new beneficiaries faster and easier.
For personal customers, transfers via the app and online banking up to €1,000 are free, with a €1 fee for payments up to €5,000 and €4 for transactions above €5,000. Commercial customers can make instant payments up to €1,000 for €0.15 and for €0.75 above that threshold.
“SEPA Instant is a major step forward in how our customers can manage their money across Europe,” said Geoffrey Fichte, Chief Executive Officer at HSBC Malta. “By combining speed, safety, and cost-effectiveness, we are making everyday banking simpler and more efficient. This is another example of how we are investing in digital solutions that truly put our customers first, while also supporting the shift away from slower, less efficient methods of payment.”
The new system builds on the introduction of Instant Inward Payments in 2024, completing HSBC Malta’s transition to full instant SEPA payment capabilities. The upgrade comes as the EU continues its drive toward universal adoption of SEPA Instant, aiming to make real-time payments the new standard across the bloc.
Customers can access the feature through the “Pay and Transfer” function on HSBC’s digital platforms or by visiting their nearest branch.
