MeDirect Group has officially completed its acquisition by Czech-based Banka CREDITAS, following regulatory approval from the European Central Bank last month. The deal, first signed in November 2024, marks the start of a new growth phase for Malta’s first digital bank.
Founded in 2004, MeDirect has grown into a pan-European challenger bank with more than 160,000 customers across Malta and Belgium, managing over €6 billion in assets. In Malta, it has become the country’s third largest bank, offering both retail and corporate clients a hybrid model of fully digital banking backed by local branches and a Malta-based contact centre.
With Banka CREDITAS now stepping in as sole shareholder, MeDirect will look to accelerate its European expansion and invest further in its Maltese operations. “We are enthusiastic to welcome MeDirect into the CREDITAS family,” said Jiří Hrouda, CEO of CREDITAS Group. “The bank already has an impressive growth track record, but we see enormous potential to go further. With its secure digital platform and broad offering of banking, investment and lending services, MeDirect shares our DNA and our commitment to serving demanding clients.”
The MeDirect brand will be retained, but the added capital and support from CREDITAS are expected to strengthen its competitive position across Europe. Jean-Claude Maher, Group CEO of MeDirect, said the partnership gives the bank “greater firepower to continue our mission to challenge the traditional banking landscape.” He added that shared values with CREDITAS around customer-centricity and innovation will be key as MeDirect works to widen the reach of its digital platform.
In Malta, MeDirect plans to expand the breadth of services available to both individuals and businesses. Already known for fast processing on home loans, high interest rates on savings accounts and access to over 4,300 financial products, the bank intends to build on its reputation for efficiency with new investments over the coming months.
“The strategic partnership with Banka CREDITAS represents more than just financial backing, it is an alignment of vision,” Maher said. “MeDirect will remain a proud Maltese bank, committed to meeting customer needs and supporting Malta’s economic prosperity.”
MeDirect will now operate as a subsidiary of Banka CREDITAS, which has been active in Czechia since 2016.
