AP Valletta’s project for the renovation and extension of Naxxar House has been awarded the 2025 Architizer A+Awards Popular Choice in the Architecture + Stone category.
The recognition marks the second consecutive year the Valletta-based firm has been honoured by Architizer, the world’s largest platform for architecture. Last year, AP Valletta was named Popular Choice Winner in the Best Adaptive Reuse and Renovation Firm category.
Naxxar House is a sensitive restoration of an 18th-century palazzino, where contemporary architecture meets Maltese tradition. One of the project’s defining features is a fixed stone privacy screen, crafted from local softstone using traditional techniques. The sculpted screen balances privacy with aesthetics, casting shifting patterns of light and shadow across the façade.
“Having worked on historic buildings for some time, we have come to believe that the combination of a bold decision and a delicate intervention is the best formula for success in projects with heritage value,” said Konrad Buhagiar, founding partner of AP Valletta.
The project showcases AP Valletta’s philosophy of grounding architecture in cultural context while responding to modern needs. Architizer described this year’s winners as works that “value precision, materiality, and craftsmanship over formal radicality,” demonstrating how buildings can be “globally relevant and deeply rooted in place.”
AP Valletta will be celebrated alongside other winners at an official ceremony in New York this autumn.
