Cybersecurity giant Proofpoint has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Hornetsecurity, a European cloud security provider with offices in Malta, in a deal that bolsters Proofpoint’s push into the small and mid-sized business market.
The agreement, announced on Monday, will see Hornetsecurity – a specialist in Microsoft 365 (M365) protection and managed service provider (MSP) solutions – join Proofpoint’s portfolio to create a unified, AI-powered platform focused on human-centric cybersecurity.
While the terms of the deal remain confidential, Hornetsecurity brings more than $160 million in annual recurring revenue and serves over 125,000 customers, largely through its network of more than 12,000 MSPs across Europe.
The acquisition is expected to close in the second half of 2025, pending regulatory approvals.
The deal has a local angle. Hornetsecurity has had a presence in Malta since its 2021 acquisition of local company Altaro, a fast-growing provider of backup solutions. That office has since remained part of its European footprint.
Daniel Hofmann, founder and CEO of Hornetsecurity, will continue to lead the company post-acquisition. The firm’s flagship product, 365 Total Protection, offers email security, data backup, awareness training, and compliance tools tailored for Microsoft 365 environments.
“With the addition of Hornetsecurity, we’re excited to extend our industry-leading, human-centric security platform to better serve the unique needs of MSPs and SMBs,” said Proofpoint CEO Sumit Dhawan.
The move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Proofpoint’s position in the high-growth SMB space and to scale its presence across European markets.
Hornetsecurity’s products will continue to operate independently in the near term, with a longer-term plan to integrate offerings and share AI-driven threat intelligence across platforms.
As cyber threats grow increasingly sophisticated, the combined companies say they are aiming to meet the evolving needs of businesses at every scale — from Fortune 100 giants to local MSPs operating in regional markets like Malta.
