The Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry will host an information session on 28th October 2026, bringing together legal experts, business leaders, human resources professionals and representatives from support organisations to discuss employers’ responsibilities in addressing gender-based violence and workplace harassment.
Entitled “Do Not Look Away – Gender-Based Violence is also a Business Issue”, the event will take place at The Brewhouse, located in the Central Business District, between 8:30am and 12pm.
The initiative aims to strengthen awareness among employers of the legal, organisational and social implications of gender-based violence, while providing practical guidance on creating safer and more supportive working environments.
Organised by The Malta Chamber, the event forms part of an initiative funded by the Commission on Gender-Based Violence and Domestic Violence through the Together We Empower – A Future without Violence programme.
Examining Employers’ Legal Obligations
A key focus of the event will be the legal responsibilities of employers in preventing and addressing workplace harassment, including sexual and gender-based harassment.
The session will examine the existing legal framework, the obligations placed on businesses to safeguard employees and the procedures organisations should consider when responding to incidents involving members of staff.
Dr Matthew Brincat, Partner at Ganado Advocates, will deliver a presentation outlining employers’ legal obligations in ensuring working environments remain free from harassment.
The programme will also feature Louise Calleja, Assistant Commissioner of the Malta Police Force, who will address the different forms of violence experienced by victims and the evolving nature of these incidents.
The presentations are intended to provide business leaders and HR professionals with a clearer understanding of their responsibilities and the measures available to support affected employees.
The Role Of Businesses In Supporting Employees
The event will also feature a panel discussion focusing on how employers can respond to situations involving gender-based violence and provide appropriate support to employees.
The discussion will bring together professionals from victim support services, human resources and organisational wellbeing.
Panellists will include Sharon Attard De Giovanni from Victim Support Malta; Ramona Galea, Head of People and Culture at Lufthansa Technik Malta Ltd; Mariella Galea, Founder and HR Consultant at HR TalentLEAD; and Patrick Psaila, Founder and Director of PsyPotential Ltd.
The discussion will be moderated by Rachel Bondi Attard, Head of Media and Communications Strategist at The Malta Chamber.
Participants will examine the importance of recognising potential warning signs, establishing appropriate workplace procedures and ensuring that employees experiencing gender-based violence have access to relevant support mechanisms.
The discussion will also consider how organisations can foster a workplace culture that encourages individuals to seek assistance without fear of discrimination or stigma.
Strengthening Workplace Policies And Organisational Responsibility
The Malta Chamber’s initiative highlights the growing importance of addressing gender-based violence within the broader framework of corporate responsibility, employee wellbeing and workplace governance.
While gender-based violence is often regarded as a personal or social issue, its implications can extend into professional environments, affecting employee wellbeing, workplace relationships and organisational operations.
The event seeks to encourage businesses to consider how internal policies, management practices and employee support structures can contribute towards preventing harassment and responding appropriately when concerns arise.
By bringing together legal professionals, employers and organisations providing support to victims, the initiative aims to facilitate informed discussion and promote practical approaches that businesses can implement within their operations.
The programme will also provide an opportunity for participants to engage with speakers and industry professionals during a networking session.
