Robert Debono, chief executive of db Group Malta, has laid out a confident vision for the group’s expansion – one built on a growing pipeline of concepts across multiple categories and a deliberate effort to recruit and develop the people needed to deliver them to international standards.
Writing publicly this week, Debono described the two tests the group applies before backing any brand: whether a genuine gap exists in the market and whether the right operators are in place to run it properly. Both matter, he says, but it is the second that the group is investing in most actively. Malta’s hospitality sector has expanded rapidly and db Group has positioned itself at the more ambitious end of that growth -launching multiple concepts across multiple categories within a single month.
To sustain that pace, the group has built teams from within, invested in internal development and cast the net wide for external talent. Debono is direct about what that means in practice: joining db Group Malta is not the same as taking a role at a single hotel or restaurant. The scale of the operation and the speed at which it moves, demands professionals with serious experience behind them.
The underlying message is one of momentum. A strong concept without capable execution, Debono says, remains nothing more than a document – and db Group intends to have both.
