Malta has reached a major milestone in its Second Malta–Sicily Interconnector project with the successful completion of a 103km high-voltage subsea cable. The €300 million infrastructure project, awarded €261 million in European Regional Development Fund financing and designated an Operation of Strategic Importance under the EU's 2021–2027 programme, has been years in the making.

Manufactured at Nexans' facility in Charleston, USA over a period of 12 months, the cable underwent rigorous testing to ensure it meets the highest standards of quality, reliability, and performance. Energy Minister Miriam Dalli hailed the achievement as a significant step forward, highlighting the second interconnector's potential to enhance Malta's electricity resilience, strengthen its connection with mainland Europe, and support the integration of renewable energy.

The cable has now been securely spooled onto a dedicated carousel and is ready for installation on the Nexans Electra cable-laying vessel. Installation is expected to begin later this year, following preparatory marine route clearance. Once completed, the second interconnector will improve Malta's energy security while helping the country transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable electricity system.

The project's significance lies in its potential to boost Malta's connection with mainland Europe and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources. As the country continues to navigate its long-term energy transition, this milestone marks an important step forward in securing a more resilient and sustainable energy future.
