Tesla is reportedly sitting on as much as $800 million worth of unsold Cybertrucks in dealerships across the US, casting doubt on Elon Musk’s prediction that the company would sell 250,000 units per year.
According to data from Tesla-info.com, inventory peaked at over 10,000 Cybertrucks earlier this month. Although that figure has since dropped to around 5,000, it’s still a dramatic jump from the roughly 1,000 units reported in March. The site briefly pulled its data before republishing updated figures — fuelling speculation around the true scale of the problem.
Tesla has only sold around 6,400 Cybertrucks in Q1 2025, far below expectations and well short of the targets Musk publicly laid out. The company has now reportedly slowed Cybertruck production, shifting attention and resources to more reliable performers like the Model Y.
The Cybertruck’s poor performance has been blamed on a mix of quality issues, production delays, and ongoing controversy surrounding Musk’s political activity. Despite Tesla offering attractive financing options to boost demand, the futuristic truck appears to be struggling to win over buyers.
It’s a notable stumble for a company that has long dominated the EV market and for a product that was billed as a radical disruption to the automotive status quo. For now, the Cybertruck looks less like a gamechanger and more like a costly misfire.
