Virtu Ferries has acquired a 24,000 square metre site at the Port of Pozzallo, Sicily, as part of a €6 million investment aimed at strengthening trade between Malta and Italy.
The new logistics hub, announced on Wednesday, will include warehousing, trailer parking, office space, and accommodation for drivers. It is expected to support the company’s freight operations between Sicily and Malta, where Virtu runs more than 1,500 high-speed ferry trips per year.
The site was purchased from the Sicilian regional government, with development works now underway. A spokesperson for Virtu said the project will “enhance the company’s Fast Track Cargo service” and “support wider regional logistics.”
The hub is designed to serve both local distributors and cross-border operators, providing a base of operations at one of Sicily’s southernmost ports. The location is seen as a key node in the maritime trade route connecting Malta to mainland Europe.
Italian authorities, including the Regione Siciliana and its Department for Territory and Environment, supported the transaction. Virtu Ferries acknowledged the role of public cooperation in finalising the deal.
While not a major expansion in size for the company, the move reflects ongoing efforts to improve logistics infrastructure tied to Malta’s essential supply lines. It comes as operators across the region adapt to rising demand, tighter schedules, and growing pressure on regional port capacity.
Virtu Ferries is one of the main providers of fast ferry services between Malta and Sicily and is registered as an Authorised Regular Shipping Service under EU maritime rules.
