STMicroelectronics Malta has been recognised with the Gold Award in the Business Leader in Energy and Water Sustainability category at this year’s Malta Business Awards, underscoring its long-standing commitment to responsible and efficient manufacturing. As the country’s largest private employer, the company has spent more than three decades embedding sustainability into its operations, guided by the belief that environmentally conscious practices benefit people, industry, and the wider Maltese economy.

Sustainability is not treated as a standalone initiative within STMicroelectronics Malta but as a core operational principle. The company runs a series of programmes aimed at managing environmental impacts throughout its facilities and across its supply chain. This aligns with the wider strategy of STMicroelectronics globally, which seeks to develop technologies that support digitalisation, smarter mobility, and decarbonisation — three areas regarded as central to meeting global economic and environmental challenges.

The Maltese operation plays a pivotal role within the group, ensuring that manufacturing processes reflect the same forward-looking approach embodied in the products it develops. With a strong focus on reducing resource consumption, STMicroelectronics Malta has prioritised energy optimisation and the conservation of natural resources, particularly water.

In recent years, the company made significant upgrades to its water management infrastructure. These improvements have sharply reduced its dependence on Malta’s natural water reserves while supporting national priorities around long-term resource resilience. Central to this progress is the adoption of advanced technologies that enable circular water use within the facility.

One of the site’s most notable achievements is the introduction of a system that recycles industrial wastewater streams. Through reverse osmosis treatment, this water is purified and reintegrated into manufacturing processes, creating a closed-loop system that meaningfully lowers overall consumption. To complement this, the company has also installed a cutting-edge Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant, which uses Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology to treat biological, industrial, and domestic wastewater. This integrated approach further enhances water efficiency and minimises environmental impact.
