Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy S25 Edge, a new ultra-thin flagship device priced at $1,099, marking the beginning of what’s expected to be a wave of slimmer smartphones this year.
Weighing just 163 grams and measuring 5.8mm thick, the S25 Edge is around 30% thinner and 25% lighter than the S25 Ultra. The handset pairs sleek design with high-end features including a titanium frame, a 200-megapixel rear camera, and advanced AI functionality. It goes on sale in the US on 30 May.
Blake Gaiser, Samsung’s Head of Smartphone Product Management for the Americas, said the company had responded to growing demand for lighter, more pocketable devices. “The amount of weight we’ve pulled out of this device and the slimness… is just dramatic,” he said.
The release comes ahead of Apple’s expected iPhone 17, which is rumoured to be of similar thickness but with fewer camera features — setting the stage for a renewed battle over smartphone design.
The S25 Edge features a 6.7-inch display, 12GB RAM, and up to 512GB of storage. While it is $100 more expensive than the S25 Plus, it is $200 cheaper than the top-tier Ultra model. To achieve its slim profile, Samsung made some compromises, such as excluding the S Pen, telephoto lenses, and 1TB storage option.
Battery capacity is 3,900mAh — smaller than the S25 Ultra’s 5,000mAh — but Samsung says software-based AI optimisations will ensure full-day performance.
The device had initially been slated for an April release but was delayed following the unexpected death of Co-CEO Han Jong-Hee. Its successful launch is seen as crucial to Samsung’s 2025 strategy, especially as the company looks to bolster its consumer electronics performance amid ongoing weakness in its chip division.
Samsung says the S25 Edge was always priced to compete regardless of US tariffs, noting its US-bound devices are manufactured outside China. The new handset will be available in black, silver, and blue, and — in a departure from the usual retail experience — won’t be tethered to demo stands. Instead, Samsung is introducing a ‘security adhesive’ that allows users to test the phone in-hand, as they would in real life.
With Apple expected to join the ultra-slim trend later this year, the S25 Edge is set to ignite a new era of lightweight smartphones aimed at users tired of bulky flagships.
