PayPal has announced a new partnership with OpenAI to let users pay for their shopping directly within ChatGPT — a move that could redefine how people shop online.
The company said it is adopting OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open-source framework that allows merchants to make their products discoverable within AI applications. Through this system, users will be able to browse, confirm, and pay for purchases without ever leaving ChatGPT.
The integration builds on OpenAI’s recently launched Instant Checkout feature, which enables users to confirm their order, shipping, and payment details entirely inside the chat. Using PayPal’s payment infrastructure, shoppers will be able to pay directly with their PayPal wallets or cards, benefiting from the company’s well-established buyer and seller protections.
Starting in 2026, merchants using PayPal’s platform will see their products automatically listed within ChatGPT across categories such as fashion, beauty, home improvement, and electronics. Importantly, merchants will not need to build new integrations — PayPal will handle routing, catalog syncing, and payment processing in the background.
As part of the rollout, PayPal is also launching an Agentic Commerce Suite, giving businesses tools to manage AI-driven payments, feature their product catalogs across different AI apps, and access consumer insights gathered from these platforms.
The move marks another step in PayPal’s broader strategy to embed its payment technology into AI-powered ecosystems. Earlier this year, it integrated payments within Perplexity, an AI search tool, and adopted Google’s Agent Payments Protocol to power transactions across Google’s AI-enabled products.
“Hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT each week for help with everyday tasks, including finding products they love, and over 400 million use PayPal to shop,” said Alex Chriss, President and CEO of PayPal. “By partnering with OpenAI and adopting the Agentic Commerce Protocol, we’ll enable people to go from chat to checkout in just a few taps.”
Beyond the commerce integration, PayPal will also roll out enterprise ChatGPT access to its employees and expand the use of OpenAI’s Codex tools for software development, further embedding AI into its operations.
