The Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS) and the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) have signed a new collective agreement that significantly improves conditions for academic staff at the institute.
The agreement, signed on Friday in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg, introduces a number of enhancements to support both educators and students. These include stronger salary packages, faster career progression, new allowances, and the introduction of the academic title of Professor within the ITS framework.
The updated conditions are designed to reinforce ITS’s position as a centre of excellence in tourism and hospitality education, while also strengthening the student learning experience. The agreement is also expected to improve employee wellbeing and help ITS attract and retain top academic talent.
Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg described the agreement as a “significant milestone” in acknowledging the value of educators in Malta’s vital tourism and hospitality sector. “By supporting improved conditions and investing in quality education, we are ensuring a stronger future for the industry,” he said.
ITS CEO Pierre Fenech expressed satisfaction at the development, saying the new agreement gives the institute momentum to support continued academic growth and improve its position as an employer of choice. He also thanked the staff of the People and Standards Division and MUT representatives for their collaborative efforts.
MUT President Marco Bonnici said the deal recognises the essential role ITS academics play in one of Malta’s key economic sectors, while further strengthening the institute’s educational framework.
