Malta has become the base of a new milestone in international broadcasting with the launch of Med.TV, the world’s first television channel dedicated entirely to Mediterranean culture, lifestyle, and business.
The station, founded by Anton Tabone, a former Maltese diplomat to the United Nations and non-resident ambassador to the UN for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, has officially gone live after receiving approval from the Broadcasting Authority and signing a national distribution agreement with GO.
Med.TV is also Malta’s first broadcaster to obtain a satellite licence, allowing it to transmit to over 160 million households across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The channel has already been airing on SKY Italia for two weeks and will soon expand to cable operators in Cyprus and Tunisia, with further plans to launch on FAST platforms such as Rakuten in the coming days.
Tabone described the project as a landmark moment for Malta and the wider region. “The Mediterranean has always been a crossroads of civilisations – where cultures, languages, and traditions have intertwined,” he said. “Launching Med.TV from Malta is symbolic. It reflects who we are and where we’re heading. Our island embodies the Mediterranean spirit and can serve as a bridge between Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.”
Med.TV aims to unite the region’s diverse voices on a single platform, celebrating everything from art, food, and music to business, sustainability, and innovation. Programming will be available in multiple languages – including English, Italian, French, Arabic, Spanish, and Greek – all broadcast in their original form and subtitled in English to preserve authenticity.
The schedule features a mix of original and collaborative productions. MedBiz, a weekly show on regional entrepreneurship, and Med What’s On, which spotlights cultural events across the region, form part of the launch lineup. The channel is also broadcasting Inter-Rives, a Euro-Arab co-production project supported by COPEAM and the Arab States Broadcasting Union, which brings together public broadcasters from across the Mediterranean to produce documentaries on shared cultural and social themes.
Drama and entertainment are also central to Med.TV’s offering. Among its early highlights is Vivi e Lascia Vivere, a Neapolitan drama about resilience and reinvention, alongside a slate of travelogues, cooking shows, and Med CEOs, a forthcoming series profiling leading Mediterranean entrepreneurs.
Beyond entertainment, Med.TV positions itself as a hub for cultural exchange and dialogue, commissioning original content exploring environmental and social topics such as climate change, sustainability, and the preservation of heritage.
“We want to highlight the Mediterranean’s shared challenges and opportunities,” Tabone said. “There’s incredible strength in this region’s ability to adapt and reinvent itself. Through storytelling, we aim to build understanding, empathy, and pride among the people who call the Mediterranean home.”
Accessible via GO, SKY Italia, and satellite, Med.TV will soon launch its own streaming platform, offering live and on-demand content globally.
From the coastlines of Spain to the souks of Morocco and the islands of Greece, Med.TV is bringing the Mediterranean to screens around the world for the first time – as one connected story.
