HV Hospitality has welcomed the Planning Authority’s approval of its €170 million Six Senses Comino redevelopment, calling the decision a major milestone for sustainable tourism in Malta.
The project, which will see the full transformation of the existing Comino Hotel and bungalows at San Niklaw Bay and Santa Marija Bay, follows five years of planning, consultation, and revisions in response to stakeholder feedback.
“This important milestone affirms our vision to create a world-class hotel that elevates Malta’s tourism product while respecting the unique character of Comino,” said Melo Hili, CEO of Hili Ventures, the parent company of HV Hospitality. “We are proud to partner with Six Senses, a global leader in eco-conscious hospitality, to deliver a carefully integrated and environmentally responsible destination.”
The development will introduce a lower-density tourism model, reducing guest capacity from 284 to 240 and decreasing the number of bungalows from 21 to 16. No new development will take place on previously undisturbed land.
Designed by Belvedere Architecture, the resort will also restore over 8,200 square metres of developed land to its natural state. More than 55,000 endemic trees, plants, and shrubs will be planted in what HV Hospitality describes as Malta’s first large-scale reforestation initiative.
The project includes efforts to improve public access to the foreshore, eliminate the discharge of untreated sewage into the sea, and restore garigue habitats in line with the Natura 2000 Management Plan. It will also respect Comino’s dark sky designation and seek LEED certification for sustainable buildings.
HV Hospitality reiterated that the redevelopment will remain exclusively dedicated to tourism, in line with the site’s existing concession.
Although the project has attracted scrutiny in recent years—particularly from environmental groups concerned about the island’s delicate ecosystem—the company insists the approved plan represents a responsible balance between investment and preservation.
With planning approval secured, the transformation of the Comino site is now set to move forward.
