Google’s New Phone Will Translate Your Calls In Real Time

Google’s new Pixel 10 smartphones have arrived, and the standout feature is one that could transform how people communicate across languages: real-time phone call translation.

The Pixel 10 series, powered by Google’s Tensor G5 chip, can now translate live phone conversations, allowing two people speaking different languages to understand each other seamlessly. The system not only delivers translations instantly but also mimics the speakers’ tone of voice, making the exchange sound more natural. On-screen, the phone generates a transcript of the conversation, giving users a record of what was said.

Unlike earlier Google translation tools that required a subscription, this capability comes built into the Pixel 10 and works entirely on-device. That means the translations are private, with no need to route conversations through external servers — a move that addresses long-standing concerns around data security.

The new feature, branded as Voice Translate, was showcased at the launch event with a live demonstration between English and Spanish speakers. For a company often criticised for AI tools that feel like novelties, this practical application is likely to resonate widely with travellers, businesses, and multilingual families.

Beyond Voice Translate, the Pixel 10 series introduces Magic Cue, an AI assistant that anticipates user needs by pulling information from apps like Gmail, Calendar, and Messages. It can, for example, suggest a response to a dinner invitation by recognising an existing reservation in the calendar. The feature is optional, and users can restrict or disable it to maintain tighter control over their data.

The phones also gain enhanced photo editing through Google’s Gemini AI. Users can type commands such as “brighten the shot” or “fix the framing,” and the system automatically edits the photo. While not as headline-grabbing as real-time translation, it underlines Google’s push to position the Pixel 10 as both a communication tool and a creative device.

Looking ahead, Google teased a forthcoming “universal AI assistant” designed to take on more complex, proactive tasks across apps and services. While details remain limited, the announcement suggests the company is moving closer to a model where phones act less like passive tools and more like active digital partners.

The Pixel 10 launch reinforces Google’s strategy of embedding AI into every layer of its hardware. By delivering a feature as instantly useful as live call translation, the company is signalling that AI on smartphones is shifting from flashy demos to solving real, everyday problems.
