EC English has told agents worldwide that it cannot accept any new student arrivals at its schools this weekend, citing unforeseen operational circumstances. The announcement has triggered immediate alarm across the global education agent community.

The language school group, which operates 25 centres across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Malta, South Africa and Dubai, informed agents in writing that it would be unable to provide students with their planned programmes or accommodation. Agents were asked to contact affected students immediately, including those who had already booked flights and made other travel arrangements.

EC English expressed deep regret for the disruption caused to students, families and the agents who had placed their trust in the company. The group said its immediate priority was ensuring that students due to travel this weekend did not set off, with a further update promised once the situation had been confirmed. The company did not respond to a press request for comment.

The timing is particularly uncomfortable for EC English. Founded in 1991, the group serves students from more than 120 countries and has already been managing a period of contraction. It closed its Bristol school in June and is set to shut its Montreal site at the end of September, following a strategic review of its global operations. Those closures were framed at the time as a way to concentrate resources on the strongest-performing centres, with new programmes planned in Spain and China.

The broader English Language Teaching market offers little reassurance. New data shows student weeks fell by 23 per cent in 2025, with student numbers down 10 per cent, extending two consecutive years of decline. Industry experts are forecasting further drops in 2026 and have urged providers to adapt to a market increasingly shaped by fewer adult learners, shorter course durations and growing demand in the juniors segment.

For agents who have been placing students with EC English, the situation is immediately and acutely practical. Flights are booked, families are expecting good news, and this weekend promises difficult conversations. What comes next for EC English and the students caught in the middle remains, for now, an open question.
