Giorgia Meloni’s government became Italy’s longest-serving uninterrupted administration since 1943 on 3 September 2026, clocking 1,413 consecutive days in office and edging past the 1,412-day record set by Silvio Berlusconi’s second government between 2001 and 2005. In a country that has cycled through roughly 68 governments over the past eight decades, the milestone is a genuinely unusual piece of political arithmetic. Meloni marked the occasion with a large pre-election rally in the southern city of Bari.
The durability of her coalition rests on a few consistent pillars. She has maintained firm support for Ukraine, kept Italy’s finances broadly in order and built a working relationship with US President Donald Trump that has become one of her more visible foreign policy assets. Her government also points to the creation of around 1.2 million stable jobs, an unemployment rate that has fallen below six per cent and a significant drop in irregular migrant arrivals, from 157,651 in 2023 to 66,316 in 2025.
Whether those numbers are enough is the more contested question. Critics argue that weak productivity, demographic decline and long-standing inefficiencies in healthcare, education and public administration remain largely untouched. Political analyst Lorenzo Pregliasco described the government as stable and long-running but noted it had delivered little in the way of structural reform. Opposition leader Giuseppe Conte, a possible rival at the next election, argued that while the government was celebrating, ordinary Italians were not, pointing to the persistently high cost of living.
There is also pressure emerging from Meloni’s own flank. Retired general Roberto Vannacci has launched a rival party on the Italian hard right, contending that Meloni has traded her early combative positions for a more institution-friendly image, leaving her traditional base feeling stranded. Whether that translates into a meaningful vote share will depend on how many conservatives read her moderation as pragmatic statecraft rather than ideological drift.
With an election due by the end of 2027, the longevity record is now settled history. The open question is whether voters conclude that the stability was worth it.
