In the second interview of our series “In the Driver’s Seat” powered by Bolt , where we sit down with leading figures shaping Malta’s business landscape. We join Chris Vassallo, Strategic Director of Vassallo Group and CEO of Campus Hub, to discuss business, leadership, calculated risk and the experiences that have shaped his journey.
For Chris Vassallo, growth has rarely been about simply making a business bigger. It has been about identifying opportunities, taking calculated risks and building businesses that can create lasting value.
As Strategic Director at Vassallo Group and CEO of Campus Hub, Vassallo is part of the generation tasked with taking one of Malta’s largest family-owned businesses forward.
At the group’s headquarters, however, there is a constant reminder of where that journey began: the original truck purchased by his grandfather.
Today, that family business employs more than 2,000 people across some 30 businesses, generates approximately €100 million in annual revenue and, according to Vassallo, is valued at more than €300 million.
His next target is considerably bigger.
“I have a personal ambition to get this group worth a billion euros,” he says.
Learning Leadership By Doing
Vassallo’s introduction to business came early. He remembers accompanying his father to construction sites, including during the development of Malta International Airport, before spending his summers working across different roles within the group’s hotels.
Those experiences gave him an understanding of the people and operations behind a business long before he found himself leading one.
One of his first major challenges came at Vassallo Joiners, which was facing growing competition as imported furniture increasingly entered the Maltese market.
At the time, the company employed just 16 people and generated around €300,000 in revenue.
Rather than competing through imports, Vassallo took the business in the opposite direction, focusing exclusively on custom-made furniture and using local production as a differentiator.
The strategy worked.
Revenue grew from approximately €300,000 to €3 million, the workforce expanded from 16 to 60 people and the business diversified with the introduction of a metal division.
But growth also brought lessons that could not be learned from revenue figures alone.
A later venture in catering eventually reached around €10 million in annual revenue but did not deliver the profitability Vassallo had expected. It became an important lesson in understanding the wider forces that influence a company – and the reality that scale does not automatically translate into success.
That experience eventually pushed him back into education. He became a chartered director through the Institute of Directors in London, believing he needed stronger tools to contribute to the family business at a strategic level.
That thinking fed into Vassallo Group’s 2020 vision, developed in 2016 with the objective of doubling the size of the group within four years.
According to Vassallo, the target was achieved in roughly half that time.
The takeaway was clear: when the different companies and leadership teams within Vassallo Group worked towards one shared objective, the organisation could move considerably faster.
One of the most significant outcomes of that strategy would become Campus Hub.
Betting €65 Million On A Gap In The Market
Campus Hub started with a University of Malta tender but Vassallo saw an opportunity that extended beyond conventional student accommodation.
Existing accommodation offered around 130 beds. Campus Hub entered the market with approximately 1,000.
Behind that scale was a belief that Malta had significant untapped potential as an international education destination – and that accommodation needed to become part of the overall student experience.
Rather than creating an isolated residence, Campus Hub was designed around an open piazza where students could interact with the wider community.
For Vassallo, it was also the biggest professional risk he had taken.
“This was my do or die project,” he says.
The €65 million development represented the family’s single largest investment at the time, putting considerable weight behind an idea that had yet to be proven locally.
Today, Vassallo believes the concept has helped establish a new benchmark for student accommodation in Malta.
The business is already looking at what comes next, with another, more niche student accommodation project in development. The focus this time is on widening the range of options available to students while keeping pricing competitive.
It’s one of several major chapters explored in Episode 2 of ‘In The Driver’s Seat’, powered by Bolt, as Chris Vassallo discusses not only the commercial decisions behind projects such as Campus Hub, but also how his approach to entrepreneurship has evolved beyond traditional measures of business success.
Building Businesses With Social Impact
Vassallo’s ambitions, however, are increasingly extending beyond conventional measures of business growth.
His experience as a father has pushed him towards social entrepreneurship, particularly through the development of ‘Hand in Hand’.
Speaking about his son Zane, Vassallo describes him as “the biggest teacher of my life”.
His family’s search for the right environment and support for their son took them to the UK and the US before eventually bringing them back to Malta.
That experience became the catalyst for something much larger.
‘Hand in Hand’ began with between six and nine students. Its primary and secondary school in Rabat now supports 42 students, while its services have expanded to include a life skills centre at Campus Hub and post-secondary support.
More than 100 families are now part of its wider community.
For Vassallo, the next challenge is scale – but in a way that continues to respond to individual needs.
His ambition is to develop another two schools, creating a network through which students can move according to their needs as they grow. Two additional projects focused on autism and disabilities are also expected to be launched.
It represents another side of Vassallo’s approach to entrepreneurship: using the same mindset of identifying gaps and building solutions, but applying it to challenges where success is measured through social impact as much as financial return.
Taking Vassallo Group Beyond Malta
After decades of building businesses locally, Vassallo believes the next stage for the group will increasingly involve looking beyond Malta.
International expansion is being considered particularly within the group’s retirement home operations and Campus Hub division, with markets that invest heavily in student accommodation among those being explored.
The ambition represents a natural evolution for a group that has spent years diversifying across sectors while remaining entirely family-owned.
Yet across Vassallo’s different ventures, the underlying approach remains remarkably consistent: identify an underserved market, understand what can be done differently and then build the team capable of delivering it.
From turning around a struggling manufacturing business to placing a €65 million bet on student accommodation and transforming a personal family challenge into a growing social initiative, his career has been shaped as much by calculated risk as by growth itself.
Now, with a €1 billion valuation in his sights, new international markets being explored and further social projects on the horizon, the next challenge is not simply making Vassallo Group larger.
It is deciding where that growth can have the greatest impact.
