Prime Minister Robert Abela has confirmed that the government is in talks with Delta Air Lines to bring back direct flights between Malta and New York in 2027. He made the announcement in his reply to Budget 2027 in Parliament, as he set out plans to strengthen Malta's international air links.

Delta flew its first direct Malta-New York service on 7th June 2026, connecting Malta International Airport with John F. Kennedy International Airport. It was the first time travellers could fly directly between the two cities, with the airline operating the route three times a week using Boeing 767-300 aircraft. Passengers could travel between Malta and the United States without changing at another airport.

The route arrived after Delta announced the new transatlantic service earlier in the year, having prepared to launch it over the summer.

Government figures point to strong demand. The route recorded an average seat occupancy rate of 84% up to 21st September 2026.

In September, during his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, Abela met Delta Air Lines Vice President Scott Jordan to discuss extending the route into 2027. He stressed the value of stronger international connections in drawing more tourists and opening up new business opportunities.

Delta has not yet officially confirmed whether the direct Malta-New York flights will return in 2027.

In the same Budget reply, Abela said Qatar Airways will resume direct flights between Malta and Doha in March 2027, giving travellers connections to destinations including Australia, Japan and China.
